To understand how to use CBD oil for pain, it’s important to know that each person contains a system known as the Endocannabinoid system (ECS).
This system is made of receptor cells that communicate and maintain a homeostatic balance within our body.
In fact, our receptor cells are found all throughout our body, from our central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract to our immune system and peripheral nervous system.
The ECS is responsible for regulating our digestion, sleep, mood, reproduction, appetite, perception of pain, memory, immunity, temperature, motor control, and pleasure.
However, if an issue arises within the ECS, our homeostasis is no longer in balance and we can develop problems like inflammation, pain, nausea, stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Our body naturally produces endocannabinoids such as Anandamide and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2AG). These two endogenous cannabinoids are not only vital to our immune, mental, and overall health, they’re also the only endocannabinoids that scientists currently know of.
Researcher Dr. Ethan Russo suggested, from a 2004 study, that some people suffering from multiple health issues, diseases, and conditions may, in fact, have an endocannabinoid deficiency.
As a result of this deficiency, Dr. Ethan Russo also suggests that phytocannabinoid medicines, such as CBD, may help treat a number of unwanted negative health conditions .
CBD helps relieve pain by preserving anandamide otherwise known as the “bliss molecule”.
Unfortunately, this bliss molecule is short lived. Anandamide is first discharged by neurons and then is very quickly broken down within our body. It’s within this endocannabinoid that inflammation, appetite, mood, and perception of pain, are regulated.
In a normal, healthy body, the breakdown of anandamide is not an issue, but when there’s an endocannabinoid deficiency, our whole system is thrown off and we’re left with excessive inflammation, which produces chronic pain, anxiety, and so on.
Fortunately, when CBD is consumed, it prevents anandamide from breaking down too fast, by binding to the proteins that help break it down in the first place.
The longer anandamide stays in the system, the more the ECS can regulate our body back into a homeostatic balance.

Any activity from biking, swimming, dancing, hiking, running, walking and especially more rigorous ones like weightlifting, bodybuilding, etc., all cause damage to the muscles and tissues in our body.
When the muscle and tissue are damaged two things happen: Inflammation sets in, and aches and pains soon follow. Inflammation primarily comes in two forms: chronic and acute.
Although inflammation is usually associated with pain, it’s also our body’s way to repair itself. When the tissue and muscle are damaged, inflammation sets in and triggers a repair process.
It’s through this repair process that the muscles and tissues grow back stronger allowing them to be more fit. But too much inflammation may contribute to excessive muscle damage.
This is why many athletes take precautionary measures to prevent excessive inflammation by eating foods full of antioxidants as well as taking supplements. Some even do ice baths to reduce inflammation, while others rely on NSAIDs to recover from achy joints and muscles.
NSAIDs have a tremendous amount of side effects and can cause more harm than good with prolonged use.
However, studies have shown CBD to be a powerful anti-inflammatory. According to a 2016 review in the FASEB Journal, cannabinoids such as CBD respond to inflammation through mechanisms much differently than how NSAIDs act on inflammation.
